Ken Deveraux Death, Obituary – The KFFB wishes to inform the community of the demise of our former Captain and Life Member, Ken Deveraux AFSM, yesterday. It is with deep regret that the KFFB makes this announcement. Ex-Captain Deveraux has been a respected member of the Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade and the greater CFA Family for more than 55 years, and the fact that the Kangaroo Flat Pumper was given his name in recognition of the contributions he has made to our brigade is a testament to the significance of his contributions.
In recognition of the tremendous contributions that Ex-Captain Deveraux made to the community over the course of his career, he was presented with a number of awards and distinctions, including the Australian Fire Services Medal (AFSM) as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2006.
A crucial and Key Member of the CFA North West Region Community Safety Group, Ex-Captain Deveraux also served as the President of the Bendigo Easter Fair Society for a number of years. In addition, he was a member of the CFA North West Region Community Safety Group.
In addition to that, Ken was a significant contributor to a large number of additional community organizations located all around Kangaroo Flat and the greater Bendigo Community. Ken spent a substantial amount of his spare time as a volunteer at Bendigo Health, where he would visit patients in the hospital and bring them both companionship and happiness. In addition to this, he generously devoted several of his own Christmas mornings to playing the role of Santa Claus and touring the children’s ward with leftover candy bags from our Christmas Eve Santa Runs.
Everyone who knew Ex-Captain Deveraux will remember him fondly as a gentleman, a “strong but fair man,” and a man who could spin a good yarn or two. He will be much missed.
Now re-joined for a cup of tea and a few of biscuits with his “partner in crime,” Ex-Captain Bill Bowery AFSM (dec), who retired from the military.
Please join me in extending condolences to Lorraine, Ken’s wife of more than 55 years, as well as the rest of his family and loved ones. Vale Kenneth (Ken) William Deveraux AFSM.
Sincerely and with Best Regards, In the name of the KFFB, Captain James O’Brien.
